Assistance with family integration: daycare, schools, and employment
The Faculty relocation & integration coordinator will advise you on choosing daycare and schools to help ease your entire family’s transition.
Daycares
Several childcare options are available for preschool-aged children (up to age 5):
-
Centres de la petite enfance (CPE)
-
Subsidized and non-subsidized daycare centres
-
Home-based childcare services
Registration for CPEs and subsidized daycare centres must be completed through the Childcare Services Registration Portal.
For non-subsidized daycare centres and home-based childcare services, applications are made directly with the provider. Wait times are generally shorter than for CPEs and subsidized daycare centres.
Childcare expenses for non-subsidized services are eligible for the Québec tax credit for childcare expenses, which is designed to help families offset the costs associated with childcare.
Elementary and secondary schools
In Québec, there are public and private schools, which may be French-language, English-language, or bilingual. As French is the province’s only official language, instruction is generally provided in French at the kindergarten, primary, and secondary levels. Children who do not speak French may attend welcome classes within the French-language public school system.
Only students who are eligible under the Charter of the French Language may attend English-language schools. This includes children of parents who were educated in English in Canada, as well as children of temporary residents who have obtained a certificate of eligibility for instruction in English.
In addition, several non-subsidized private schools offer instruction in English that is not subject to this authorization. Admission is generally based on an application file, entrance exam, and interview. Please note that these schools do not receive government funding and therefore have higher tuition fees.
