Research internships | Climate Change Adaptation
Lead by the Université de Montréal and its partners in 7 countries (Kenya, Haiti, Australia, South Africa, United Kingdom, Costa Rica, Democratic Republic of Congo), this internships program aims to support 23 Canadian and international fellows to carry out research internships on the theme of adaptation to climate change, between January 2025 and December 2028.
Supported by the Canadian Government through the Queen Elizabeth Scholars Program, the project wishes to build the capacities for young leaders, promoting networking and links with grassroots communities. Upon their return from international assignments, graduates will be able to foster the development of long-term, constructive exchanges and partnerships.

A collective and inclusive initiative
Thanks to a collaborative approach, the project :
- Involves several disciplines within UdeM and various academic partners with whom UdeM has research collaborations.
- Also involves civil society players through a partnership with Climate Reality Project Canada, which will offer opportunities for community involvement in the various countries of the program.
- Promotes a comprehensive experience for these young leaders, both in terms of strengthening their expertise, developing scientific and academic leadership and diplomacy, and their commitment for climate at local and international levels.
In addition, the program aims to ensure equitable access to scholarship offers, in particular by promoting inclusive excellence that values the diversity of student knowledge, interpersonal skills and know-how. In doing so, it supports of a vision of excellence and success that goes beyond academic performance indicators alone.
Research internships at Université de Montréal
The program offers research internships at UdeM to Canadian and international candidates. Recruitment is based on a combination of profiles and research themes related to adaptation to climate change.

Follow these steps to learn how to submit your application :
Eligibility criteria
- Never have received funding under the Queen Elizabeth Scholarships program
- Hold citizenship of an eligible country (the 7 countries of our partner universities are eligible; for other nationalities, please contact us)
- Be no more than 35 years old at the time of application
- Be enrolled in a 2nd or 3rd cycle program at a higher education institution
- Ability to communicate in at least one of the languages used in the partner organization or establishment.
The research internship must provide credits or other academic recognition.
Students who have applied for Canadian citizenship or permanent residency in Canada are note eligible.
Funding and duration
The amount of the scholarship is a maximum of 11,350$ CAD for a 95-day stay (excluding travel and orientation days), including a settling-in allowance and a monthly living allowance.
Payment of the scholarship is subject to receipts (boarding passes, payment receipts, etc.).
Eligible expenses:
- Visa fees
- Round-trip economy airfare to Canada
- Health insurance and vaccines
- Other expenses related to the research internship
Submit an application
You must apply to an internship opportunity. The documents to provide are the following:
- Completed and signed application form - Download: English | French
- Proof of citizenship of the eligible country
- Proof of admission to a 2nd or 3rd cycle program at an institution of higher education
- A duly completed and signed letter of reference from the scientific sponsor of the home institution, using the template provided (the scientific sponsor must be the same as the research supervisor identified in section 4 of the application form).
Important: given the time required to obtain visas, it takes approximately 6 to 9 months from the selection of your application to your arrival for your internship.
Selection criteria
A diverse selection jury, including the professor who originated the internship offer and the scholarship program manager, will evaluate the candidates' applications according to the following criteria:
- Their research skills related to the internship topic
- The excellence of their academic record
- Their personal knowledge and experiences (including non-academic ones)
- Their experience and interest in community engagement
- Their professional project

If your application is selected, members of our team will contact you to remind you of the steps required to obtain your scholarship:
- Notice of award and confirmation of arrival dates in Canada
- Obtain invitation letter from internship supervisor
- Immigration procedures; confirmation of dates of stay based on receipt of your immigration documents. It is your responsibility to ensure the validity of your travel documents (e.g. passport, visa, vaccination booklet, etc.)
- Admission and registration at UdeM as a research visitor
- If applicable: application for ethics approval and submission of certificate
- Air ticket purchase
- Pre-departure form on the Queen Elizabeth Scholars Portal
- Payment of scholarship by UdeM international
- Arrival and welcome sessions for the scholarship recipient at UdeM
- Obtain a social insurance number and open a bank account for the bursary recipient
- Internship and complementary activities
- Final payment
Community involvement, leadership-building and networking activities
Those selected to receive scholarships will be required to participate in complementary activities:
- Be active in the network of Queen Elizabeth Scholarships recipients (#QES2025), participate in networking events.
- Engage in community activities with Climate Reality Project Canada and its international and local partners.
- Follow personalized coaching sessions and leadership development activities.
Reporting and accountability
Each program participant will be asked to write a short narrative report at the end of the course, and to provide all necessary supporting documents (boarding passes and other payment receipts).
