Literature and Languages

View the requirements related to your field of study. If your program of study is not listed here, then only the normal requirements apply.

Asian Studies (Literatures and Languages of the World)

A minimum GPA of 2.7/4.3 or 12.5/20 is required.

Communication

Closed Programs

  • Bachelor in Communication Sciences
  • Master's degree (DESS) - Journalism

Undergraduate Students
Students only have access to courses offered in the mineure en sciences de la communication (1-225-4-0).

Graduate Students
The motivation letter must include a description of the candidate's research project.

Required Average
Due to the high number of applications received each year, the selection of candidates is very competitive, and only applications with results above 13/20 (65%) or equivalent will be considered.

Langage Requirement
If your native language is not French, you will need to provide a language proficiency certificate indicating the level achieved in both oral and written skills, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, corresponding to level C1 or its equivalent.

Comparative Literature (Literatures and Languages of the World)

Applicable programs:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Comparative Literature
  • Master’s degree in Comparative Literature
  • Bachelor’s degree in Comparative Literature and Philosophy

C1-level proficiency in French is required.

English Studies (Literatures and Languages of the World)

Language requirements

If your first language is not English, you must provide proof of B2 English proficiency. All types of language certificates are accepted; for example, a letter from home university, English level test of the British Council, etc.

Upon arrival, you must take an English placement test and may be asked to take an English language course depending on placement result.

 

Course requirements

Only students who are currently enrolled in a similar program of study at their home university can take 2000 and 3000 level courses. 

French Language Literatures

Closed program

  • Bachelor in Literature and Human Sciences

Language requirements
If your first language is not French, you must provide a proof of French proficiency of C1 for the bachelor programs, and of C2 for the Graduate programs.

German Studies (Literatures and Languages of the World)

Language requirements
If your first language is not German, you must provide proof of B2 German proficiency. For courses in French, a B2 French proficiency is required. Prospective students can contact the Academic Advisor for any questions.

Information Science

Master in Information Science - School of Library and Information Science
Only students enrolled in an Information Science graduate program at their home university can take Master's courses in this program.

Linguistics and Translation

Language requirements:

For the following programs, you must provide a Test de français international (TFI) with a score of 785/990, or pass the DALF or TEF at C1 level, based on the proficiency levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Translation (118510)
  • Major in Translation (118520)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics (118010)
  • Major in Linguistics (118020)
  • Bachelor’s degree in French-language Literatures and Linguistics (114715)
  • Doctorate in Linguistics (318010)

For the Master’s degree in Linguistics (218010), a B2 level of French is required.

Additional requirements:

  • D.E.S.S. and Professional Master’s degree in Translation (218511): You must provide a DALF or TEF at C2 level, based on the proficiency levels of the CEFR, and have a high level of English proficiency.
  • Research Master’s degree in Translation (218511) and Doctorate in Translation (318510): You must provide a DALF or TEF at C1 level, based on the proficiency levels of the CEFR, as well as demonstrate a high level of English proficiency.

Bachelor’s degree in French-language Literatures and Linguistics (114715): students must take a minimum of two linguistics courses per term.

Minor in Arts and Sciences

The Minor in Arts and Sciences is a multidisciplinary undergraduate program in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. This program lets exchange students take undergraduate (bachelor’s- level) courses from several different programs of study within this Faculty (they must be authorized by the department offering the course).
